Attacks on North Eastern Indians in Pune

The attacks on North East Indians in Pune is very unfortunate. Some of the victims were from Nagaland. There are many Nagas living in Pune, mostly students. The incident allegedly sparked off due to the conflict and violence in Assam between the Bodos and illegal Bangladesh immigrants. But this turn out to be ugly as the attacks were on any random people from the North East with oriental features.

As educated sensible people we should not do anything foolish back home as well. Trying to avenge on the non-locals there and taking matters in our hands will not be wise. Pray for the safety of your wards in these cities and for the victims. As per the new reports in Pune, there seem to be a lot of support from the Police, Muslim locals and college authorities. Here is what every sensible citizens should do - think with your head!

  • Do not take the law in your hands.

    • In such conflicts, there are chances victims and those who sympathize with them might want to take matters in their own hands and retaliate. DON'T.

    • Take appropriate course of actions as per the law applicable.

  • We should use media responsibly and rationally.

    • Social Media spreads information like wild fire, be careful what you read and see.

    • Don't be spontaneous - don't believe every thing you see.

    • Watch out! Let not others mess your mind with a propaganda. Act responsibly.

  • Do not sensitize issue based on religion.

    • I know we become sensitive and defensive when other's hurt our feelings. But be careful not to sensitize all issues based on religion.

  •  Don't just simply patronize issue going on in other regions and make it your problem

    • Some issues are not religious as it seems, they could be political and mostly importantly local to that particular region's issue and problems. For example, the issue in Assam was not ethic conflict between the Bodos and Muslims as media initially reported. Bangladeshis were illegally flooding to NE states. Sympathizing with them religiously, leaving aside national interests is not really a justifiable reason to spread violence in your region.

    • Just because two ethic groups are fighting in some corner of the world, don't take it up as your cause and start your own fight in your region causing citizens in your region to suffer.

Just recently there was a Gurudwara shooting in the US. If the Sikhs in India started searching and killing any foreigner in India, any sensible person would say that is wrong.
If every one practices 'an eye for an eye' the whole world will go blind
